Everyone talks about goals. Set them, chase them, achieve them. But what happens when the goals feel hollow, or when the effort required to reach them drains you completely?

Goals are destinations, but Purpose is the compass that guides your life. Your purpose, or your “Big Why,” is the deeper motivation that sustains momentum and gives genuine direction to your life, whether you’re leading a company or managing your home. When your actions align with your Purpose, life ceases to be a constant struggle and becomes more intentional, energised, and truly fulfilling.

1. The Difference Between a Goal and a ‘Why’

It’s crucial to understand the distinction. Goals are transactional; they are things you want to have or do. Purpose is transformational; it is who you choose to be and the impact you want to make.

  • A Goal: Achieving £1 million in revenue this year.

  • The ‘Why’: To build a stable, inspiring company that allows me to mentor my team and provide lasting security for my family.

A goal gets you out of bed in the morning, but your Why keeps you going when the goal feels impossible. The goal is the summit; the Why is the fuel and the map. The secret here is that you'll only find true happiness and success when you stop pursuing external achievements and start living in alignment with your inner reason for being.

2. The Simple Process of Purpose Discovery

Your purpose isn’t something you have to invent; it’s something you must uncover. It’s already woven into your core values and the things you care about most deeply.

Here is a simple reflection exercise to start connecting your values to your everyday life:

  • List Your Core Values: Write down the three to five values that define you. (Examples: Integrity, Growth, Family, Community, Creativity).

  • Identify Your Action: Look at your main tasks this week (at work and at home).

  • Find the Link: Ask yourself: How does this action serve one of my core values? If you can't find a link, that action may be draining your energy because it lacks purpose.

By finding the connection, you are no longer just performing a task; you are affirming who you are. This alignment brings instant meaning and energy to your day.

3. Energy vs. Effort: The Sustainable Drive

When you act with purpose, your effort changes quality. Actions that align with your Why generate intrinsic energy. You aren't forcing yourself to perform; you are acting from a deep well of motivation.

Compare it to pushing a heavy trolley uphill versus simply stepping onto a moving escalator. When you are disconnected from your purpose, life feels like that uphill push—it requires constant willpower and effort, inevitably leading to burnout.

When you are living on purpose, you feel like you’ve stepped onto an invisible escalator—you are moving in the right direction, and while you still have to take steps, the movement itself is sustained by a force greater than your fleeting motivation. This is how high achievers maintain momentum and balance over decades. They’ve learnt to tap into the sustainable energy of their Big Why.

Your purpose is the compass that directs every decision, making your life more intentional and your success inevitable.
